“Hey! I’m not dinky! You’re dinky, Sanjay!” she yelled defensively while stomping a foot down and crossing her arms. Jerry and Jovie giggled to themselves as they heard her still mumbling to herself, “You dink, Sanjay, You dink. I don’t dink, you dink.”

It was dinnertime for the Wintuks as they all sat down. Jerry had prepared dinner this night. He and Jovie usually switched off depending on one another’s schedule and mood. He was an excellent cook, and quite enjoyed it as well. Tonight’s menu included a whole roasted chicken flavored with lemon and sage, steamed vegetables flavored with rosemary, and a baby green salad tossed in a balsamic dressing with almonds, feta cheese, and dried blueberries.

“Bon appetit!” he yelled as he set down the last dish in the middle of the table. The family dug in as their mouths watered from the delicious smells and sight. Jovie noticed Sierra’s eyes were bothering her as she kept rubbing them.

“Sierra, what’s wrong with your eyes, hunny?”

“They’ve been irritated ever since Tinker Bell over here blew glitter into them," she answered while pointing over at Sherpa. Everyone at the table looked over at little Sherpa at the same time with judging eyes.

“I’m sorry," she said while looking down, you could hear her voice cracking.

“You don’t need to cry about it," Sierra said with a retort in her tone.

“I’ll never do dat again, Sierra," Sherpa said, becoming very emotional. The age of a toddler was such a delicate time in one’s life, everything was so emotional as you were bombarded with different and new feelings constantly. Right now for Sherpa, the emotion she was experiencing was guilt and remorse, with a touch of embarrassment.

All the Wintuks stopped eating and looked at one another in awe, Sierra looked at her sister, “What did you say?”

Sherpa began crying harder now, “I said, I’ll never do dat again, Sierra.”

Sierra jumped up from her chair to give Sherpa the biggest hug ever, while Jovie, Jerry, and Sanjay all began clapping. Sherpa was confused as she wiped away tears and stared at them with her big blinking eyes that always appeared too large for her face.

Sierra grabbed her sister’s face, pushing her hair out of the way and said, “You did it, Sherpa! You did it!” Sherpa was still obviously confused and looked at all of them, trying to figure it out. “You said, Sierra! You didn’t call me Sara!” Sherpa’s face lit up as her confidence was restored and her happiness rebooted from the inside out.

“Sierra! Sierra! I did it!” Sherpa shrieked back, as she clapped her hands together and gazed over, scanning all of her family member’s faces as they smiled at her and cheered her on. Sherpa felt like she was on cloud nine at that moment as her emotions did a complete one-eighty, feeling loved and proud now.
